Awards and Recognition Programs

Medal of Honor Awards

The FFLA Medal of Honor Award, established in 1977, is the organization’s highest honor recognizing exceptional contributions to the legal profession and the administration of justice in Florida. It is awarded annually in two categories: one for members of The Florida Bar and another for non-lawyers or individuals not actively practicing law who have made a significant impact through service, research, or advocacy.

Goldstein – Van Nortwick Award for Excellence

The Goldstein – Van Nortwick Award for Excellence honors a project of significant impact by an FFLA grantee that demonstrates high-level legal work, addresses key poverty-law issues, and benefits a substantial number of low-income individuals. Renamed in 2019, the award commemorates the legacy and friendship of Steven M. Goldstein and William A. Van Nortwick—two passionate advocates for justice whose dedication continues to inspire FFLA’s mission.

Paul Doyle Children’s Advocacy Award

The Paul Doyle Children’s Advocacy Award recognizes outstanding systemic legal advocacy on behalf of low-income children in Florida. Named in honor of Paul C. Doyle, the award celebrates his legacy of promoting high-quality legal representation and statewide collaboration to support vulnerable youth, and is presented biennially at the FFLA Annual Award Ceremony.

Jane Elizabeth Curran Distinguished Service Award

The Jane Elizabeth Curran Distinguished Service Award honors The Florida Bar Foundation’s first executive director and her groundbreaking leadership in establishing the nation’s first IOTA program. The award recognizes individuals whose careers have significantly and lastingly expanded access to civil justice for low-income Floridians through exceptional dedication to public service.

President’s Award for Excellence

The President’s Award for Excellence recognizes outstanding work on behalf of FFLA. The award is presented by the current FFLA president at our Annual Award Ceremony.

Award recipients are honored each year at our Annual Award Ceremony during The Florida Bar Annual Convention.
