Former Florida Supreme Court Justice James C. “Jimmy” Adkins has been awarded the 1992 Medal of Honor for a Lawyer in recognition of his outstanding contributions to improving the administration of justice in Florida.
James C. “Jimmy” Adkins epitomizes the finest qualities of the legal profession and of humanity. As much as any living Floridian, Jimmy Adkins, through his professional and personal achievements, has profoundly affected and improved Florida’s legal system. His abiding respect of common men and women was the underpinning for all his judicial opinions and vast legal advocacy and gave him an unshakable confidence that justice will prevail if the fundamental rights of people — without regard to economic or social standing — are protected.
His long and illustrious career as a lawyer, judge and Supreme Court Justice spans an era of unprecedented growth, development and turmoil in the Sunshine State. Jimmy Adkins’ lifetime in the law reflects most what is positive and good about the legal profession in our system of justice. Jimmy Adkins is truly an icon of the legal profession, and a folk hero to the people of Florida. We are proud to honor him with this award.
