Children’s Rights to Quality Services and Community Responsibilities: To provide support: 1) to promote local community interest and energy for expansion of Children=s Services Districts (ad valorem taxing districts) to fund services for children, including legal services; and 2) to promote the funding of legal services by existing Districts and county-based Children=s Commissions (and any future Districts of Commissions). To reduce attitudinal barriers and, therefore, improve outcomes of court and other law-related proceedings for persons with disabilities through increasing employment options for disables persons in the legal field (law schools, paralegal schools, law firms, courts systems, governmental entities and other related legal entities).

To provide general support for the initiative to screen and investigate criminal cases and to advocate for the release of inmates excluded from criminal responsibility through DNA testing. To support the initiative which seeks to screen each criminal case in which the initiative’s assistance is sought, to investigate every case in which meritorious innocence claims are found, to achieve DNA testing when biological evidence remains extant, to advocate for the release of each inmate excluded from criminal responsibility through this highly [DNA] forensic inquiry. Two-year grant, second year funding released pending review of progress in the first year (2005) and the availability of funds.

Perceptions in Justice: To provide general support of resources for a statewide law related education (LRE) program to impact students, teachers, judges, attorneys and policy-makers.

Florida Justice Teaching Institute: To provide funds for travel expenses for Florida middle and high school teachers to attend the Institute. The Florida Justice Teaching Institute equips teachers with the academic and clinical experiences necessary to effectively teach students about the court system.

Rethinking the Restoration of Civil Rights in Florida: To provide support to identify and minimize barriers to voting and other aspects of citizenship for non-incarcerated citizens with a prior felony conviction(s), through research, public policy advocacy, individual case advocacy, development of training.

Lee County Pay or Appear Program: A third and final year of funding to test the pay-or-appear program to increase child support collections in cases not handled by the Florida Department of Revenue and decrease judicial and administrative involvement.

Florida Supreme Court Law Month Video Project: Edit “Lady Justice Needs You for Jury Service” videotape for Florida Supreme Court Law Day 2005 activities

Reporting on the Courts and the Law: To provide funds for the cost of journalists, who are new to the court and legal beats, to attend an intensive two-day workshop that will educate them on judicial issues. A Workshop for Journalists

Evaluation of the State Court System: To conduct a study and report on the implementation of Revision 7.

Training Law Enforcement on Immigration Legal Remedies: To provide funds to educate, mentor and assist law enforcement officials in Florida to help battered and abused immigrants obtain special legal remedies available to immigrant victims of crime. For Victims of Crime

Justice for Girls: Florida’s Juvenile Justice Reform Initiative: For two-year support of an initiative that will spearhead systemic reform in the care and treatment of girls in Florida’s Juvenile Justice System and includes a Florida-based Girls Reform Blueprint Taskforce combined with a Public Information Advocacy Campaign.

2006 Annual Dinner Video: To provide partial support for a videotape to showcase the work of Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center on behalf of low-income immigrant clients at the 2006 annual awards dinner.

To provide funds for a joint project in which the FLREA and the Florida Supreme Court will develop and post on the World-Wide Web a new law-related education program designed to encourage judges and lawyers to engage in law-related education in Florida’s schools and to publish documents for use in that program.

Building the Foundation for a Comprehensive Legal Response to Disasters: To provide funds for a first-of-its kind meeting to bring together organizations that provide crucial services to victims of disasters who have substantial legal assistance needs with representatives of the legal community to begin a planning -process to address the myriad of legal assistance needs of victims and of such service organizations that currently go unaddressed because legal resources are not coordinated with other disaster recovery efforts.
