Criminal Justice Section – National Summit on Crime and Violence: For travel and per diem costs for Florida participants to attend conference on “Family Violence: Children, Partners and the Elderly.”

Legal Director Project: For support of the Legal Director Project in defense of fundamental rights and to conduct legal rights public education programs to increase its case load throughout the state and broaden the array of cases taken; expand and better utilize the volunteer cooperating attorneys; establish unique principles of law as they relate to the ability of Florida Courts to redress civil rights violations.

Planning Grant for Public Education on Crime: Funding to prepare a plan for increased education about Florida’s criminal justice and corrections systems.

For supplemental support of the Center’s director of the “Corrections/2000” program

Mediation Project: A two year pilot project to provide sliding scale/reduced fee family mediation to assist pro se middle income clients resolve their disputes and successfully complete their divorces.

Assistive Listening Device Technology: To conduct a study of assistive listening devices for use in courtroom settings and purchase four assistive listening devices.

Community Empowerment for Children 1994: To expand the impact of the Florida Children’s Campaign; expand FCCY’s ability to disseminate its publications to a wider audience; to promote the ability of staff to provide technical assistance to appointed commissions, task forces, and committees; and to expand their ability to promote the children’s advocacy agenda before civic, business, professional, religious and governmental groups.

For continued support of statewide law-related education projects targeted primarily to elementary and secondary school students to heighten awareness and practical understanding of our laws and legal institution.

Alternative Dispute Resolution in Farmworker Cases: To supplement the Migrant Alternative Dispute Resolution Project, a one-year pilot project to develop and implement an “alternative dispute resolution” process to resolve wage and other labor disputes by migrant workers.

The Battered Women’s Clemency Project: For support of the Battered Women’s Clemency Project for a three year period. The project will represent women prisoners convicted of murdering their batterers prior to the admissibility of expert witness testimony on “battered women’s syndrome” in applying for executive clemency.

Florida Indigent Services Project: For two-year support of the Florida Indigent Services Project to increase access of low income people to judicial and administrative relief from environmental pollution, to promote environmental laws and rules which do not discriminate against low income people, and to promote the involvement of private bar and poverty lawyers in meeting the legal needs of the indigent regarding pollution problems.

Conference on Family Violence: For travel and per diem costs for Florida conference participants. To develop recommendations regarding: an agenda for public policy; an agenda for public awareness; an agenda for research; and improvement of public understanding of the relationship among issues concerning family violence.

A matching grant for implementation of the Governor’s Taskforce Report on Domestic Violence.

Teen Court Workshop: For support of a statewide workshop for persons involved in “teen court” programs to share information and discuss the potential development of a statewide network and organization.

Judicial Administration, Selection and Tenure Committee: A matching grant for the cost of travel and honoraria for the symposium on “Reconsideration of Selection and Retention of Judges.”
